Another Neccesary Genuise from the world of Svankmajer
A strange and yet unique take on Lewis Carroll's marvelous story, Alice In Wonderland. Heavily laden with stop-motion, Alice, has a creepiness and dream-like quality unique unto itself. The visions seem to come right from the visions of a dreaming child, which of course is the whole point. Skeletal Animals and stuffed rabbits with scissors seems scary at first, but it is definitely a film for the whole family, perhaps more for the children (though at first take you might disagree with me). Alice is our complete narrator, there are no other voices and no music and all the sets are extremely claustrophobic, might make the film seem rather dry, but nothing Svankmajer (director) does (or doesn't do) is without purpose. This is the story of Alice in Wonderland as it was meant to be told (or filmed I should say), by a child speaking of her very real dreams which have been constructed (as with all real dreams) from her immediate environment. This film is not for everyone (especially for the impatient easily distracted Americans), this is nothing like the Disney, drug-referencing, day-glow cushy flowers of fun that your used to. If you lack an imagination, or if children who share their nightmares with you, bore you, then this film is not for you.
A surrealist film - different from what you'd expect
For a surrealist film its very good, but its not my sort of thing. This film is probally a film you will love or hate. It isn't at all like the Disney's version as it would probally be quite scary for kids - its a surrealist adult version where the director mixes animation with live performances, basing it on the book 'Alice'. Lots of strange things occur and this film tests whether you can watch something that is completly out of this reality; a sock that uses false teeth to talk is the caterpiller, there is no chester-cat, and the film is full with food-related objects and unexpected surrealist happening.
Alice was a trip
I'm a huge fan of Alice in Wonderland, and this was a nice add to my collection. Although overall depressing and even scary as this version was, it was an interesting take on the classic children's story. Many of the scenes were portrayed in stop motion animation, which was pretty cool, and it gave the whole thing a very raw feel. I'd recommend it to avid fans of the book who want something a bit different, but don't show it to your kids. It was definitely made for an older audience.
Charminig and Bizarre
"Alice" is not riveting, nor ar art museums; but similar to art musuems "Alice" is filled with miniature visual vignettes that are jarring, cute, confusing, and simply a joy to watch. I adore how the white rabbit clicks his giant teeth; how he is filled with sawdust which spills onto his pocket-watch. This movie requires patientce. Yet for lovers of odd visual effects, stop-motion animation (pre-digital), and I would also add that if you like Tim Burton's "Nightmare Before Christmas," you may like "Alice"(although the latter is not a musical). If you've read Lewis Carrol's book, you'll like it: because if you've read Lewis Carrol, you will relish "Alice"'s love-triangle between the weird, the cute, and the creepy.
ALICE a film by Jan Svankmajer
This film is like being stuck in Alices' lucid dream/nightmare, and your own, simultaneously. The stop-animation makes the movie a living entity, and Jan Svankmajers mind is the catalyst between the dimensions. Amazingly brilliant and one of a kind. i heard that Tim Burton was inspired by Jan Svankmajer, so anyone who is a fan of his work MUST see this film. Also, his short, "Darkness Light Darkness" included on this DVD is earth shaking!.. I rate this film an A+++ One of the best i've ever seen... highly, highly recommended!
