Political drama adapted by Graham Greene from his novel, about an odd assortment of characters living and coping in 1960s Haiti, under the regime of dictator "Papa Doc" Duvalier, and his infamous secret police, the Ton Ton Macoute.

    The Commedians

    Very good portrayal of the shocking brutality endured by the Haitians during the reign of 'PaPa Doc' and carried over by his son 'Baby Doc'. Not even the glam of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton could hide it. It is interesting to note that Voodoo played a significant role in the governance of Haiti at that time, and that PaPa Doc considered himself a Voodoo Priest. Alec Guinness was very believable in his role as a wannabe hero facing the truth in the end. It is not an epic feature, but it has a good positive ending. It certainly piqued my interest in delving more into the history of Haiti and her long-suffering people. My prayer is that some day they have their place in the sun.
