"A flowing, unbroken version that reads as effortlessly as a novel...with startlingly familiar hopes, fears, and lusts. Mitchell...cracks open the lessons inGilgameshby rebuilding its clay fragments into a poem easy on the eyes and the transcultural imagination....Vibrant, earnest, unfussily accessible.... The muscular eloquence and rousing simplicity of Mitchell's four-beat line effectively unleash the grand vehemence of the epic's battle scenes, and the characters' ominous visions emerge with uncanny clarity." --The New York Times Book Review, "Seamus Heaney isn't the only one intent on making the classics relevant to our times. • Against Gilgamesh, not this translation

I have not read any other versions of the Gilgamesh epic myth, but I doubt they are much different, so this is commentary on the story instead of this particular version. Gilgamesh is horrible. He is the worst "hero" I have read since my Greek mythology tried to convince me that Medea was heroic for her serial murders. He embodies NONE of the traditional heroic characteristics that one might want to instill in their children, and the story is not even well written. The basic outline of the story: 1) Gods make Gilgamesh and he is amazing 2) Since he is better than anyone else on Earth, he mistreats them 3) Gods get mad and create bizarro-Gilgamesh to kill him 4) They fight, but are evenly matched so they become friends 5) They make fun of the gods and ruin more of their stuff 6) ...

    • Great classic tale

Well written and easy to read. Very surprising. Love the flood story.

    • Gilgamesh is Gigantic! A great read for those interested in history, mythology, and where a lot of ideas came from.

Great book filled with information about civilization in the Middle East. Written before anyone else wrote theirs and which they all stole from!

    • Enjoyable Poetic Re-creation

This translation is more of a creative performance, rather than a literal or scholarly translation, though it is informed by a knowledge of the scholarship. Mitchell, as a poet, re-creates the feel of this ancient poem and gives it dramatic sweep that makes it an enjoyable read.
