    Wonderful Dolly says Hello

    I was fortunate to see Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce sing and act in a show so wonderful, it brought tears to my eyes. Not only were they hysterical together and apart, they were tremendously entertaining in a show with not one bad song in it. I saw the amazing Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway 50+ years ago and they were superb. But Bette and David brought a buffoonery and hysteria that was a completely different interpretation despite it being the exact same show. The orchestra is wonderful and the supporting cast were fabulous. Truly worth the money.

    Great, for my purposes

    This isn't the original Hello Dolly! with Carol Channing -- or the movie with Barbra Streisand. This is a more recent version with Bette Midler, which was fine for my purposes. I gather that each version is a little different, but I'm in the chorus of a local production, and I just need to learn the songs. The quality of the recording is top notch, from what I can tell (I'm not an audiophile), and the words are articulated so that I can understand most of them. If there are any that I'm unsure of, I can always look at the script.

    Bette, You're Right Up There Where You Belong

    Of all the talented women who have portrayed Dolly since 1964, Bette Midler is certainly among the top five. Outstanding recording. Supporting cast does a great job. An addition to Midler's vocal performance, her acting is moving and believable. But most of all, she is having fun throughout the evening. The songs have never sounded better. "Hello Dolly" is the highmark of a long and varied career.
