ACCUTRON REPAIRS w/Flat Rate Charge(parts/labor included)-Free Shipping!
Accutron repairs done by a Certified Bulova Technician (40+ years experience of Accutron repair, 55 years of watch repair) with a flat rate charge of $185.00, parts and labor included (except coil/coils)*. The watch will be completely overhauled and adjusted to keep perfect time using the regular replacement 1.55volt (#387S) battery without adding any electronic device to lower the voltage in the watch. If anything, this replacement battery used, will last longer (usually about 18 months) before needing replacement compared to the battery that came with the watch from the factory which is no longer produced.
*If the coil or coils are needed, the price is either $25.00 or $50.00 additional depending on the model and whether 1 or 2 coils are necessary (218 models) ...Accurate estimates are given immediately upon receipt of the watch and actual repair takes 7-10 DAYS.
Upon completion, the watch is look & run like new!
To determine whether the watch needs a coil replacement, with a new battery installed, if there is an audible hum, then most likely, the coil or coils are good...Case and crystal are also polished(included in price). If the crystal is cracked, it will be replaced at no charge (except Spaceview, Astronaut and World Timer models which are available at additional cost). Accutron tuning fork clocks are also included in this price..
Approximately 15-20 years ago, government restrictions banned using Mercury for environmental reasons which affected all battery manufacturers. They substituted Silver for Mercury which caused the battery to register 1.55 volts instead of 1.35volts from it's predecessor. The result with using this battery in a tuning fork Accutron could possibly make it run at double speed since they were originally designed to use Mercury batteries. There are various solutions to this problem such as using a battery with a diode built into it called the 'Accucell'. Another solution is that a resistor is put into the circuit to lower the input voltage. Both of these ideas, in my opinion, are not fixing the problem...the Accucell is a 'quick fix', like using a band-aid and not readily available...putting a resistor in the circuit takes away from the originality of this vintage watch and is a costly solution... Instead, with making the correct adjustments, the problem will no longer exist and contrary to popular belief, the higher voltage Silver oxide battery will NOT harm or shorten the life of the existing circuit in the watch. This is also part of the repair which I do..
Here is what Bulova Watch Company has to say about using the silver batteries:
The original mercury-based button batteries (cells) for these watches have become obsolete. The sale of mercury cells has been banned by law in some states because of environmental hazards. Major battery manufacturers have discontinued the production of these mercury-based cells. Silver oxide-based watch cells, the type used in most of today's quartz watches, are available in sizes which can be used as substitutes for the most popular sizes of Accutron mercury cells. There are, however, several important points which must be taken into consideration:
- A silver oxide-cells is 1.55 volts, compared with a mercury cell's 1.35 volts. The use of this slightly higher voltage cell will not affect the performance of a correctly adjusted Accutron. If the watch does not operate properly with a 1.55 volt substitute, the fault is either an incorrect adjustment of the movement, or worn parts in the movement.
Using a 1.55V cell will not cause any damage to the movement. The following chart will help you find a substitute battery for your watch:
